CBD’s not just for humans anymore. Today people are buying CBD products with more than themselves in mind. They’re also giving it to their pets!
That’s no surprise when you consider the environmental challenges our modern pets are facing. Like us humans, medical advancements mean they’re living longer than ever — and are therefore more susceptible than ever to age-related diseases.
If you’re a dog-lover who wants to do everything they can to help your furry friend feel good, stay healthy, and age gracefully in the long run, this article is for you. In it we’ll be looking at how CBD works and how long it stays in your dog’s system.

Why CBD works for pets and people
Before we get into how long CBD will stay in your dog’s system, let’s take a quick look at why it works for both pets and people in the first place. After all...isn’t it kind of strange that CBD would be so beneficial across different species?
According to Dr. Bob Melamede, it’s all thanks to your body’s endocannabinoid system.
“The endocannabinoid system appears to be quite ancient, with some of its components dating back about 600 million years to when the first multicellular organisms appeared. As evolution proceeded, the role that the cannabinoid system played in animal life continuously increased. It is now known that this system maintains homeostasis within and across the organizational scales of all animals.”
Melemede goes on to explain what endocannabinoids activate on the ICANNA blog. “In general, cannabinoids modulate and coordinate tissues, organ and body systems (including the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, excretory, immune, musculo-skeletal, nervous, reproductive and respiratory systems).”
While a healthy endocannabinoid system can foster balance in all these areas, something very different happens when the endocannabinoid system doesn’t do its job right. The symptoms of endocannabinoid deficiency in pets are predictable: they include chronic pain, nerve issues, arthritis, irritability, and more.
The many ways CBD could help your canine
The stats don’t lie: a growing number of our pets are suffering from the same ‘modern diseases that we are. 16 percent of elderly dogs suffer from arthritis, maybe much more. An even larger amount may suffer from insomnia. These ailments can make life challenging for both the pet and the owner.
The good news is that CBD may help. Anecdotal reports describe how pets of all sorts are experiencing amazing relief from only a few day’s worth of CBD use. Vets are noticing this, too, and growing increasingly intrigued.
And a growing number of scientific studies are backing up CBD’s potential for pets. Long ago proven to be nontoxic in dogs, research also shows that CBD may also help your furry friend overcome mobility problems, skin issues, and more.
How to give your furry friend the perfect CBD dose
Translating theory to practice, however, can be a less well-quantified story. While the studies mentioned above point to something important, there’s still not much information about the ideal dose for your dog. Below are some helpful pointers.
- The “low and slow” dosing strategy is best.
Just as in humans, CBD dosing is more art than science, with individual variance in endocannabinoid system tone contributing to different dosing demands. In general, the more severe a pet’s health condition, the higher the dosing required. Consider starting with microdosing — for example, a few drops of CBD oil per day — and build up to 1 milligram of CBD per 10 pounds of pet bodyweight.
- Full spectrum CBD is most effective.
Usually, much more effective. Though metabolism of CBD is slightly different in dogs than it is in humans, the superiority of full spectrum CBD (as opposed to CBD isolate) seems to remain the same.
- Choose the right delivery method.
Pets shouldn’t take CBD via vape pens or other smokable products. Nor should they take edibles, which often contain too many cannabinoids to accurately dose. Not to mention that edibles may contain chocolate or other ingredients harmful to pets! That leaves CBD oil as the best choice, by far, for your furry friend(s). Even then, though, it’s important to be careful...
- Choose the right carrier oil.
This is a larger point than one might expect — and a point that we encourage pet owners to take note of. That’s because many CBD brands use cheaply produced grapeseed oil as their carrier oil. While grapeseed oil’s high omega-6 content makes it unhealthy for anybody, it can actually be toxic to dogs. Better carrier oil options include MCT, coconut, olive, or hemp seed oil. At Medterra we use premium MCT oil in all our products.
How long will CBD stay in my dog’s system?
That depends...on a lot of things. Every breed is different, and so is every individual dog. (Just like CBD’s effects vary from one person to the next). This means determining CBD’s half-life can be tough. Here are some relevant factors to keep in mind:
- Your dog’s diet
- Your dog’s weight
- Your dog’s mobility
- Your dog’s CBD dosing frequency
- Your dog’s endocannabinoid status
How long do CBD’s benefits last?
These factors aside, let’s get into the details. How long do CBD’s benefits last? What’s CBD’s half-life? About four hours. For these four hour, CBD stays fully active. Edible products and CBD capsules tend to last just a little bit longer, while CBD vape pens last a little bit less (not that your pet would be vaping or anything).
Once the four hours have passed, CBD may impart more subtle benefits for another twenty hours. Consistent CBD use may allow CBD to build up in your pet’s endocannabinoid system and fat stores, leading to lasting benefits even when it’s been hours or days since their last dose.
Conveniently enough, this means that you can give your canine CBD products exactly once per day. Just keep in mind that multiple daily doses are probably a better choice if your pet’s experiencing health problems.
