With the World Cup starting today, everyone is talking about soccer. Everyone is also talking about cannabidiol (CBD). Why are these related? Because just this year, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its list of banned substances, making this the first time it can be used by World Cup players.
CBD will no longer be prohibited by the WADA, and can be utilized by all athletes. This means professional athletes can no longer be punished for CBD being found in their pre-match test results. Whereas before, fighters could be suspended for utilizing these products, but as of 2018 this will no longer be the case.
Joint inflammation, aches and pain are part of life for most athletes. With the WADA ban lifted, more and more athletes are using CBD instead of relying on ibuprofen and opioids. Research is ongoing but studies suggest that CBD may help prevent inflammation and manage pain. And, it’s hard to ignore anecdotal reports from both avid and casual athletes. Recently, former NFL player, Christian Okoye spoke about taking CBD oil to help manage his pain.
But, not all CBD is created equally. It’s important for professional athletes to choose ultra-pure CBD products, such as Medterra CBD, because tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) continues to be a WADA-banned substance. The CBD world may offer relief- but it is also very confusing.
Medterra CBD would love to help you explore this topic- and educate the public on the confusing world of CBD legality as it relates to both professional and everyday athletes. What is Cannabidiol (CBD)?
Cannabidiol, a compound known as a cannabinoid, is found abundantly in the hemp plant. Cannabinoids work by binding with a series of cell receptors found throughout our bodies, known as the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for regulating a variety of functions including mood, appetite, sleep, pain management and inflammation. Cannabidiol is non-psychoactive, so it does not make you feel “high.”
