Former NFL Uses CBD oil For Pain

Christian Okoye, a former American football fullback for Kansas City Cheifs from 1987 to 1992 started taking opioids to deal with the pain when he had trouble sleeping.

However, after speaking with a teammate, he learned about cannabidiol (CBD) that could be a possible treatment for his sleeping issues.

“A few months ago, when I was introduced to CBD oil, I stopped taking those drugs because CBD Oil helped me to manage this pain,” Okoye said.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It can be extracted from marijuana or industrial hemp.  It is a major cannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant's extract. You may be familiar with another compound called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which produces the "high" feeling. However, unlike its psychoactive counterpart, CBD does not have any psychoactive properties and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. CBD is a natural alternative which has been found to have many significant medical benefits.

“It doesn’t make you high, it just treats your body,” Okoye said. “So that’s what makes it great.”

Now several companies are conducting studies to find out if the drug can help protect athletes like NFL players from the constant contact they put their heads through during a career. Read more here
