Hemp Protein - What to Know About Plant Based Protein
The Hemp plant can do many things – one of which is produce hemp protein. But it can also be made into paper, textiles, bioplastics and hempcrete. In fact, hemp has been around so long that archaeologists have found that it was used as far back as the Neolithic age of China. Of the myriad uses for Hemp, one that has grown popular in this day and age, is as a fitness and nutritional supplement.  For those who are into fitness and wellness, finding quality protein sources that are plant-based can be a challenge.  Let’s swing back to hemp protein powder. Made by grinding pressed hemp seeds, hemp powder is high in protein and, naturally, vegan. Hemp protein provides complete protein and is the only plant-based source to do so. It contains all of the 9 essential amino acids that humans must get from food. A less processed protein source, Hemp protein also contains fiber and healthy fats and minerals. Being able to add fiber with your protein is a great advantage as everyone is well aware of the importance of this in a regular diet. Most hemp protein powders contain 7-8 grams of fiber per ¼ cup. That is equivalent to around 15% (on average) of the recommended daily intake for fiber. Being sure to have quality fiber in your diet helps with many things from digestion and regularity to overall feelings of wellbeing and energy.  Of course, with any fiber source, a good tip is to start with a smaller amount so that the body can acclimate to the increase. Sometimes, a high initial intake of fiber can cause the body to feel bloated. Easing into more plant fibers is good practice. Aside from being a great source of protein and fiber, Hemp is also rich in antioxidants - those magical compounds that protect the body from oxidative damage. Couple this with a healthful ratio of Omega-6 and Omega 3 and you have to feel confident in contributing to your heart’s health, too. It’s often tough to find Omega 3’s in plant sources, so this can be a great choice for those who are not wanting fish in their diet. Be sure to remember that, because this is a natural product, it will have an “earthy” tone or note to it. Don’t let that discourage you, though, as It can blend very well within smoothies or other blends that you tend to favorite. Other ways that you can include hemp protein powder into your diet is by blending it into your morning oatmeal or yogurt. You can also bake it into recipes like cakes, brownies and cookies. You can replace up to 25% of the flour required for a recipe and, thereby, adding hemp’s goodness to your treats. Just be sure that you keep your powder in the refrigerator once it has been opened, and, as with any change to your diet and wellness routine, it is always a good idea to discuss your ideas with your physician, first.  The uses for hemp are vast - from CBD products to utilizing seeds for high-quality consumables - and the availability and variety will only continue to grow.  As leaders in CBD, Medterra has proudly been researching, studying and creating Hemp-derived products for consumers to enjoy and incorporate into their own lives.
