frequently asked questions about CBD Pet Products

Federally, yes. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived CBD as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. Our CBD pet products go further - they use CBD isolate with zero THC, not just under the limit. You can order them online and ship to any US address without legal concern. One thing worth knowing: the FDA has not officially approved CBD as a supplement or treatment for animals, so you will not see medical claims on any legitimate product. That does not change the legality - it just means the industry polices itself on quality. Which makes third-party lab testing more important than anything printed on the bag.

Yes, and honestly, daily use is where the real results come from. Giving CBD once in a while - before a vet visit or during a thunderstorm - can take the edge off, but the compound works best when it builds up consistently. The Cornell osteoarthritis trial dosed dogs twice a day for four weeks, and the improvements accumulated week over week. The researchers knew CBD's benefits are cumulative, not instantaneous. That said, if your pet takes prescription medications, talk to your vet before starting a daily CBD routine. Some drugs - particularly those processed through the liver - share metabolic pathways with CBD, and your vet can help you work out timing so nothing interferes.

Same CBD - 99%+ pure isolate, no THC in either format. The difference comes down to what else is in the product and how precisely you need to dose. Each chew delivers 10mg of CBD along with targeted ingredients for a specific issue. The Calming Chews pair CBD with chamomile, valerian root, L-tryptophan, and L-theanine - anxiety support from multiple angles. Joint Support Chews take a different approach, combining CBD with glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM for structural and inflammatory joint support. The tincture is CBD and organic MCT oil - nothing else - giving you complete control over the dose, drop by drop. That matters most for cats, toy breeds, and any animal whose body weight puts them awkwardly between chew increments. It comes in unflavored, beef, and chicken, mixes easily into wet food, and can go directly on the gum line for faster absorption.

Match the product to the problem. If your pet's main issue is anxiety - pacing, trembling during storms, panicking when you leave the house - the Calming Chews were built for that. If the problem is physical - slower getting up, reluctance on stairs, visible stiffness after rest - Joint Support Chews are the better fit. When your pet deals with both - anxious and stiff, which is more common than you might think - the tincture makes the most sense. It delivers straight CBD without steering toward one specific concern, and you can fine-tune the dose to any body weight. Larger breeds often need more than one chew per serving, and cats or toy breeds do better with a tincture you can scale to the drop. Whatever you go with, commit to at least two weeks of daily use before deciding whether it is working. CBD needs that runway to build up - switching after a few days is not a fair test.

Most owners see something within 30-60 minutes of the first dose. Chews take a bit longer - 30-45 minutes on average - because they go through digestion, but the effects tend to last longer. Tincture on the gum line absorbs faster, sometimes within 15-20 minutes, since it skips the digestive tract entirely. Planning ahead helps. If a storm is rolling in or you have a vet visit scheduled, give your pet their CBD pet products at least 30-45 minutes before the trigger hits. For daily use, exact timing is less critical because you are building a baseline, not chasing a window. The steady-state benefits tend to lock in after one to two weeks.

The most common feedback from pet owners is that their animal seems more settled without appearing sedated. A dog that usually pants and paces during fireworks might lie down and stay put. A cat with stiff joints might start jumping onto furniture it had been avoiding. The changes are noticeable but not dramatic - your pet will not seem groggy or out of it. Side effects are rare. When they do show up, it is usually mild drowsiness, a slight change in appetite, or softer stool for a day or two while the pet adjusts. If your pet seems overly sleepy, reduce the amount and work back up slowly. And since our CBD pet products are made with pure CBD isolate - zero THC - there is no chance of psychoactive effects.

One dose carries four to eight hours depending on the format. Chews tend to last longer because the CBD releases gradually through digestion. Tincture hits a bit faster but tapers sooner - a trade-off between speed and duration. If you are dosing daily, one or two servings tends to keep things steady. Morning and evening works well for chronic concerns like ongoing anxiety or joint stiffness. More situational issues might only call for a single daily serving. And because CBD accumulates with consistent use, the baseline effect strengthens over time - most customers say the turning point was around two weeks in.

Before anything ships, every batch goes through an independent lab - ISO 17025 accredited - that tests for cannabinoid potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents. The potency test confirms what is on the label is actually inside the product, which should be standard but is not across the CBD pet products market. You can pull up the full certificate of analysis yourself by scanning the QR code on your product's packaging. No login, email request, or phone call - just the lab report for your specific batch. After what the Cornell and ElleVet research revealed about mislabeling and contamination, we think open access to lab results is the minimum.

CBD Pet Products That Deliver Real, Lasting Relief

CBD pet products are not watered-down human formulas with a paw print on the label. They are built around how dogs and cats actually process cannabinoids - different weight thresholds, zero tolerance for THC, completely different metabolic speeds.

A pet that paces through storms, goes stiff after napping, or takes an hour to settle at night is telling you something these formulas were specifically developed to address.

Watching your pet dealing with stiffness or anxiety takes an emotional toll on you. They cannot tell you what hurts. They cannot explain why the car ride triggers shaking or why the stairs have become a problem. What they can do is respond to the right kind of support - and the number of pet owners turning to CBD pet products continues to grow because they produce real, visible behavior changes.

Our collection includes calming chews, joint support chews, and a precise-dosing CBD tincture - all THC-free, third-party tested, and made with 99%+ pure CBD isolate from non-GMO Kentucky hemp. We have been formulating CBD since 2017, and our pet line reflects the same standards you will find across our full CBD shop. Browse the lineup today!

What Clinical Studies Show About CBD For Pets

Veterinary research on CBD has picked up significantly over the past several years. The body of evidence is still growing, but the findings from major veterinary programs are consistent enough that many vets now discuss CBD openly with pet owners.

Does it Work?

Cornell's veterinary college ran what has become the most cited study in this space. The trial was published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2018 and gave CBD oil to dogs with osteoarthritis at 2mg per kilogram of body weight, twice daily. Pain scores dropped significantly. The dogs moved better and were noticeably more active. Over 80% showed measurable improvement on clinical evaluation, and not a single owner reported side effects.

Colorado State University published findings on the seizure side in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2019, showing that 89% of dogs given CBD had fewer seizures. A 2023 follow-up went deeper with a double-blinded crossover trial with 51 dogs whose epilepsy had not responded to conventional medication, reinforcing CBD's legitimate role alongside standard anti-seizure treatment.

Is it Safe?

That same Cornell trial tracked blood work throughout the study - liver panels, kidney markers, the standard safety workup. Nothing concerning showed up. One enzyme (ALP) ticked up a little in some dogs, but it was temporary, caused no symptoms, and resolved without intervention.

The bigger safety concern is product quality, not CBD itself. A 2020 analysis by Cornell and ElleVet Sciences tested 29 commercially available CBD pet products. Only 10 out of 27 analyzed products contained CBD within 10% of their label claims. Four had heavy metal contamination. Two contained no detectable cannabinoids at all.

This is why certificates of analysis (COAs) from accredited labs matter more than any marketing promise on a label - and why every Medterra pet product ships with batch-specific lab results you can access by scanning the QR code on the packaging.

What is CBD For Pets?

CBD (short for cannabidiol) is a compound that occurs naturally in hemp. It works through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that helps regulate pain perception, mood, inflammation, and stress response. Dogs and cats have their own ECS, which is why CBD produces similar effects in pets to what humans experience.

Parallel effects, though, does not mean the same products work for both. Human CBD comes in several spectrum types:

Isolate is the right choice for pets because they’re more sensitive to THC than people, and even trace amounts can trigger adverse reactions. Human products like CBD gummies may also contain ingredients such as xylitol or certain sweeteners that are toxic to animals - on top of being dosed for a 150-pound adult, not a 30-pound dog.

That is why CBD pet products exist as their own category. The formulations remove everything that could harm an animal, adjust dosing to work on a per-pound basis, and use flavors and formats pets will actually accept.

The Benefits of CBD Pet Products

If you use CBD gummies for sale, CBD tinctures for sale, or CBD capsules for sale as part of your own routine, you know what CBD can do. Your pets run into plenty of the same problems - anxiety that spikes out of nowhere, stiff joints after a long rest, nights where nothing helps them wind down. CBD pet products address those patterns with formulas built around their weight and biology.

  • Anxiety and Stress Relief: Your dog does not understand why the sky is exploding during a thunderstorm - all they register is panic. Fireworks, separation, car rides, vet visits - CBD works through the endocannabinoid system to dial down that overreaction without sedation or flattening their personality.
  • Joint Mobility and Comfort: Watch an older dog try to stand up after lying on a hard floor for an hour. That slow, cautious rise is cartilage wear and joint inflammation at work. Pairing CBD with glucosamine and chondroitin targets both the inflammation and the structural breakdown.
  • Pain Support: A pet in pain guards their body. They stop jumping. They hesitate at stairs they used to fly up. CBD pet products work through the endocannabinoid system's pain pathways - a plant-based alternative to keeping your animal on long-term pharmaceuticals.
  • Digestive Health: Stress does not just affect mood - it hits the gut too. Pets who get car sick, skip meals during boarding, or deal with unpredictable stomach issues often respond to CBD's support for digestive function and nausea relief.
  • Sleep and Settling: The dog that circles the living room for 45 minutes before lying down, the cat screaming at 3 AM - those are not just personality quirks. Something in their sleep-wake rhythm has been disrupted, and CBD can help bring it back into balance.

What to Look For in CBD Products For YOUR Pet

The 2020 Cornell and ElleVet analysis tested CBD pet products from established brands on real retail shelves. Most failed basic potency accuracy. Four contained heavy metals. Two had no cannabinoids whatsoever. If you are shopping for your pet, here is what separates a trustworthy product from a liability:

  • Third-Party Lab Testing: A certificate of analysis (COA) from an ISO-accredited lab, covering cannabinoid potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents. Batch-specific, not a generic company-wide report. If the brand does not publish them, look elsewhere.
  • Zero THC: Dogs metabolize THC differently and react to amounts that would be negligible for a human. Any pet CBD product should show ND (non-detect) for THC on its lab report - not “within legal limits,” or “less than 0.3%.” Zero.
  • Dosing by Weight: A 10-pound cat and a 90-pound lab need wildly different amounts of CBD. Any product that gives you a flat "one chew daily" instruction without accounting for body weight is not serious about getting results.
  • Full Ingredient Transparency: Exact CBD content per serving, every active and inactive ingredient listed. No proprietary blends or mystery compounds. If the label leaves you guessing, the product is not worth the risk.
  • Clean Hemp Source: Non-GMO, domestically farmed hemp extracted with CO2 methods. Solvent-based extraction introduces residue risk, and that risk scales up the smaller the animal is.

We built our pet line with a simple standard - nothing goes into a pet product that we would not put into something made for ourselves. Every formula uses 99%+ pure CBD isolate, Kentucky-grown non-GMO hemp, and the same independent lab-testing protocol that covers our entire human line.

The Calming Chews are what most pet owners reach for first. Each bacon-flavored, grain-free soft chew delivers 10mg of CBD alongside chamomile, valerian root, passion flower, L-tryptophan, L-theanine, and ginger root - a blend that targets situational stress like storms and travel, but also the chronic nervousness that keeps some pets on edge all day.

Joint trouble calls for a different formula. Our Joint Support Chews take a different approach - 10mg of CBD alongside a serious joint stack: 400mg glucosamine, 300mg chondroitin, 200mg MSM. Those doses match what you would see in a quality human joint supplement. Peanut butter flavored, so your pet actually eats them.

Then there is our CBD tincture for pets. Two strengths: 300mg at 10mg per dropper, or 750mg at 25mg per dropper. Unflavored, beef, or chicken. The ability to adjust by a single drop is what makes this the right format when your pet falls between standard chew doses - a 12-pound cat does not need the same amount as a 50-pound pit bull. Every product ships with batch-specific lab results linked through a QR code on the packaging - cannabinoid content, heavy metals, pesticides, and solvents, verified before anything reaches your door.

Real Reviews From Real Pet Parents

Dialing in Dosage For Your Pet

A common starting point from veterinary guidelines is 1-2mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight, given once or twice daily. Our Calming Chews and Joint Support Chews each deliver 10mg per chew - a solid starting dose for dogs in the 25-50 pound range. Dogs over 50 pounds may need two chews per serving. Smaller dogs will need a chew cut in half.

The 300mg tincture provides 10mg per full dropper (1mL), and the 750mg bottle delivers 25mg per dropper - so you can match the strength to your pet's size and adjust by individual drops from there. Cats, toy breeds, and any pet whose ideal dose falls between chew increments do better with the tincture.

Do not expect overnight results. CBD is not an on/off switch - it accumulates with daily use, and what looks like a mild response in the first few days often sharpens by the end of the second week. A lot of our customers almost wrote it off after three or four days, then saw a real change around day ten.

Fat helps absorption, so giving CBD with food is always a good call - easier on the stomach, too. One important caveat: if your pet is on prescription medication, especially anything processed through the liver, talk to your vet before adding CBD. As for knowing whether it is working, behavior tells you everything. Is your pet settling faster? Moving more freely? Eating normally? Pay attention to those changes rather than watching the clock.
