What Clinical Studies Show About CBD For Pets

Veterinary research on CBD has picked up significantly over the past several years. The body of evidence is still growing, but the findings from major veterinary programs are consistent enough that many vets now discuss CBD openly with pet owners.

Does it Work?

Cornell's veterinary college ran what has become the most cited study in this space. The trial was published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2018 and gave CBD oil to dogs with osteoarthritis at 2mg per kilogram of body weight, twice daily. Pain scores dropped significantly. The dogs moved better and were noticeably more active. Over 80% showed measurable improvement on clinical evaluation, and not a single owner reported side effects.

Colorado State University published findings on the seizure side in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2019, showing that 89% of dogs given CBD had fewer seizures. A 2023 follow-up went deeper with a double-blinded crossover trial with 51 dogs whose epilepsy had not responded to conventional medication, reinforcing CBD's legitimate role alongside standard anti-seizure treatment.

Is it Safe?

That same Cornell trial tracked blood work throughout the study - liver panels, kidney markers, the standard safety workup. Nothing concerning showed up. One enzyme (ALP) ticked up a little in some dogs, but it was temporary, caused no symptoms, and resolved without intervention.

The bigger safety concern is product quality, not CBD itself. A 2020 analysis by Cornell and ElleVet Sciences tested 29 commercially available CBD pet products. Only 10 out of 27 analyzed products contained CBD within 10% of their label claims. Four had heavy metal contamination. Two contained no detectable cannabinoids at all.

What is CBD For Pets?

CBD (short for cannabidiol) is a compound that occurs naturally in hemp. Dialing in Dosage For Your Pet

A common starting point from veterinary guidelines is 1-2mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight, given once or twice daily. Our Calming Chews and Joint Support Chews each deliver 10mg per chew - a solid starting dose for dogs in the 25-50 pound range. Dogs over 50 pounds may need two chews per serving. Smaller dogs will need a chew cut in half.

The 300mg tincture provides 10mg per full dropper (1mL), and the 750mg bottle delivers 25mg per dropper - so you can match the strength to your pet's size and adjust by individual drops from there. Cats, toy breeds, and any pet whose ideal dose falls between chew increments do better with the tincture.

Do not expect overnight results. CBD is not an on/off switch - it accumulates with daily use, and what looks like a mild response in the first few days often sharpens by the end of the second week.
