Does CBN Help With Sleep?

CBN may be one of the least understood cannabinoids of all…but don’t think that’s a bad thing. In a world where everything is so overanalyzed, it can actually be kind of nice to encounter a little mystery every once in a while!

Besides, there’s one thing CBN is proven to do: help you access deeper, more restorative sleep. Keep reading to learn more.

Stress vs sleep

Stress doesn’t just exist within the mind. It may begin in the mind, sure, but its web quickly spreads out to impact virtually every facet of life, from sleep to social life to overall health! Ask anyone who’s struggled with stress and they’ll tell you the very same thing.

The danger of stress is clearly seen in how it affects sleep. Besides super elemental stuff like breathing and staying hydrated, sleeping is probably the single most important aspect of health. It’s during sleep that your body’s hormones get replenished and your batteries get recharged. There’s a reason that some of history’s best athletes slept for 10-12 hours a night! [1]

Chronic stress usually leads to chronic sleep problems. Chronic stress is one of the top reasons that 80 million Americans are chronically underslept. Sleep deprivation, in turn, can feed into a vicious cycle with its own downsides:

  • Slower thinking
  • Premature aging
  • Lower energy levels
  • Less accurate memory
  • Unexpected weight gain
  • Shortened attention span
  • Reduced capacity to make decisions
  • Unusual mood changes (including even more stress!)

On the bright side, there’s a natural way to get out of this stress > poor sleep > even more stress > even poorer sleep rut.

As you might expect, it has to do with CBN…

What is CBN?

Let’s start with the basics. Short for cannabinol, CBN is a cannabinoid. That just means it’s produced by the cannabis plant family — hemp included. Hemp-derived CBN is fully legal per the 2018 Federal Farm Bill that we talk about so often

Yet CBN is also unique. It’s the only cannabinoid that others eventually break down into. Virtually all cannabinoids will convert to CBN if they’re exposed to enough light and/or heat. Think of CBN as CBG’s opposite: almost all cannabinoids start off as CBG, and almost all of them eventually end up as CBN. [2]

CBN also stands out as one of the most powerful cannabinoids that starts with the letter “C.” More enthusiastic users claim CBN is downright euphoric!

What does CBN do?

CBN was actually the very first cannabinoid to be identified by the scientific world. Despite the fact that all this happened back in the 1930s, though, CBN hasn’t been nearly as well-studied as its relatives since then. It’s kind of been ignored! And that means CBN’s scientifically proven benefits lag behind its observed benefits.

Below are a few of the highlights from what we do know.

A 1975 study was among the first to really highlight CBN’s sedating nature. This study didn’t involve many participants, however, and it didn’t compare CBN to many other cannabinoids.  Cannabis experts continue to dispute the study’s validity to this day.

A much more recent 2012 study found that CBN may reduce discomfort more directly than other cannabis compounds. How? Primarily by blocking the very same TRPA and TRPV1 channels that allow the nervous system to sense pain and heat. “Future studies are needed to characterize [this capability],” study authors noted, though this one’s initial results are pretty promising. [3]

Don’t let the lagging research turn you away from trying CBN, though. Pretty much every natural substance went through an unproven phase, but during this time they weren’t without benefits. Their benefits were just yet to be confirmed by clinical science!

We expect CBN to track along a similar path in the future. As time goes by it’ll probably become more and more clear that we’ve been sitting on a gold mine.

CBN-infused gummies

While there are all sorts of ways to enjoy CBN, one way stands out from the rest: the CBN-infused gummy. CBN gummies are simply gummy products that have been infused with hemp-derived CBN.

The best CBN gummies also stand out for what they don’t contain. It wouldn’t make sense for a CBN gummy brand to place artificial colors or flavors in their product, for example, as these substances directly clash with CBN! You’ll also want to select a CBN product that’s verifiably free from pesticides, herbicides, etc.

What can I use CBN gummies for?

CBN gummies can be used for all sorts of good stuff. Similar to collagen powder or vitamin C, they aren’t limited to a single function. Enthusiasts take CBN gummies to improve sleep, reduce muscular tension, relieve aches and pains, improve calmness and confidence, and much, much more.

At the heart of these nearly-endless benefits is something simple, something we mentioned at the start of this article: stress reduction.

Experiencing this stress reduction is equally simple. Just start off by taking a low dose of CBN before slowly dialing things up. How low is low enough? Something in the 3-6 milligram range should be perfect to start. If you’re not experiencing the benefits you’d hoped for, just take a little more.

If you’re taking CBN specifically to sleep better, take your daily dose each evening a few hours before you hope to get to bed. If you’re taking it for general wellness, on the other hand, feel free to take CBN at any time of the day!

One final thing you should know about CBN gummies for now: they digest more slowly than other types of CBN products. That means they’re able to provide lasting pro-sleep benefits throughout the night — helping you fall asleep and stay asleep.

What to look for in premium CBN-infused gummies

As great as CBN might be, not all CBN-infused gummies are created equal. Some gummy manufacturers choose to put artificial colors or flavors in their products. Not good!

There are other things to look out for, too. You may want to ask yourself the following before you buy:

  • Is the brand backed by any medical professionals or cannabis experts?
  • Do the brand’s products feature other pro-sleep compounds?
  • Do the brand’s products have transparent labeling?
  • Is the brand eco-friendly and sustainable?
  • Are the brand’s products plant-based?
  • Is the brand health-conscious?

Medterra’s Fast Asleep Fast-Acting Gummies check all these boxes and more. In addition to being all-natural and ultra-effective, our Gummies remove one of CBN’s biggest conventional limitations: its slow absorption rate. How? By using advanced nanotechnology to bring CBN’s onset time down from one hour to ten minutes (actually, just under ten minutes).

Fast Asleep Fast-Acting Gummies contain other pro-sleep ingredients, too: including melatonin, l-theanine, and passionflower. Add some natural fruit flavors to the mix and you've got sleep support that tastes as good as it feels!

Another sleep-friendly option

Another great option? Our new Sound Asleep Gummies! These Gummies are the highest-potency sleep aids we offer — meaning they’re designed to work when nothing else will. While they don’t contain CBN, there’s no shortage of pro-sleep goodies here. Sound Asleep Gummies are infused with:

  • 5 milligrams of THC | In addition to having its own ultra-relaxing benefits, THC may potentiate the effects of CBD.
  • 50 milligrams of CBD | Studies show that high-quality CBD may reduce stress enough to support sleep quality and quantity. [4]
  • 3 milligrams of melatonin | Melatonin is one of the most studied sleep aids, well . . . ever. A huge body of clinical research shows it may support sleep quality, duration, and more. [5]
  • 100 milligrams of L-theanine | L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in green tea. It’s calming enough to help you feel relaxed before it’s time to rest.

All in all, we created Sound Asleep Gummies for anyone and everyone who wants to have better sleep sessions and more energized days. Bonus points if you’re health conscious, because these Gummies don’t contain anything bad!

But don’t just take our word for it. It’s always a good idea to check out what customers are saying.

Stephen says Sound Asleep Gummies are more than a match for his busy work schedule:

“My friend recommended this and I'm very impressed! I've been trying to fix my sleep schedule since I travel a lot of work. However, taking these gummies have been a game-changer for me. I get more sleep so I wake up with more energy to conquer my days.”

And Jennifer says they work even better than sleep meds — at least for her:

“I have been using Sound Asleep for over 3 weeks now. It works better than any medication I have received from my doctor. I get a good night's sleep and feel well rested the next morning.”

CBN: summing things up

CBN is a pro-sleep, pro-relaxation cannabinoid that remains surprisingly underrated to this day. Try it out for yourself if you’re looking to improve your sleep habits and/or overall chill. Just be sure to pair your desire to sleep better with a truly premium CBN product.

As far as where to get CBN, any of our top products at Medterra contain trace amounts of the compound. You can also buy specialized CBN products from several brands. (As always, though, be sure to opt for a brand that stays transparent with their lab testing and ingredients list.)
